Stonework Restoration That Respects the Building

Old stonework tells you what it needs - if you know how to read it. You can't just patch it with cement and hope for the best. You need to understand the building, match the stone, and use methods that won't cause more harm than good. We carry out restoration on historic buildings, listed properties and period homes across Angus and beyond. Lime mortar, hand-matched stone, and an approach that starts with listening to what the building is telling us.

Finding the Right Stone

Original quarries close. Stone weathers and changes over decades. We know where to source material that matches - and when to use reclaimed stone from the same era instead.

[   02   ]

Traditional Methods

Lime mortar, hand-cut stone, original techniques. We use the methods that suit the building, not the ones that are quickest.

Listed Buildings

We understand the requirements for working on listed and historic buildings, including liaising with conservation officers where needed.

Structural Repairs

Cracked lintels, eroded quoins, failing arches - we carry out structural stonework repairs that restore strength as well as appearance.

Repointing

Old mortar joints need care. We repoint in lime mortar, removing only what needs removing and matching the original profile.

Period Properties

Georgian, Victorian, or older - we've worked on period buildings across Angus and know how to approach them with the respect they deserve.

Restoration Questions Answered

[   FAQs   ]

Restoration FAQ - Masowa & Son
Do you work on listed buildings?

Yes. We've carried out restoration work on listed and historic properties. We understand the approvals process and work to the required standards.

Can you match the original stone?

In most cases, yes. We source stone to match the original as closely as possible in colour, texture and size. Over time, new stone weathers in and the repair becomes practically invisible.

Do you use lime mortar?

For historic buildings, yes. Lime mortar is softer and more breathable than cement, which is what these buildings need. Using the wrong mortar can actually cause more damage.

How do I know if my stonework needs restoration?

Common signs include crumbling mortar, loose or missing stones, damp patches, or visible cracks. If in doubt, get in touch and we'll come and have a look - no charge for that.
